Varanasi
: The Gateway of Salvation
 

Situated in the Eastern Uttar Pradesh on the banks of river Ganga- Varanasi- one of the oldest and holiest cities of India. Varanasi is also called �Kashi� or the city of spiritual light. From time immemorial Varanasi has been the center of education, religion, art and culture. The city is marked by various narrow by-lanes, temples, banks, ashrams and the pavilions. The city is an important center for silk weaving and Banarasi silk saris and brocades are cherished as collector�s items across the world.

The Major attraction of Varanasi is The Ghats. Thousands come here daily for a holy dip in the Ganges and to worship in the temples beside the ghats. The main ghats are the Assi Ghat, Kedar Ghat, Shivala Ghat, Dattatreya ghat, Tulsi Ghat, Harishchandra ghat, Dasaswamedh Ghat, Meer Ghat, Ram Ghat, Panch Ganga Ghat, etc. Each of the ghats has a particular significance.

Durga Temple was built in the 8th century, in the Indian Nagara style. It is one of the most important temples in Varanasi. The shikhara of the temple is formed by many small spires which are built one on top of the other.

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple or The Golden Temple was built in 1776 by Rani Ahilyabai of Indore. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The gold on the towers around 800 kgs was donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Lahore. Close to this temple is the Gyan Kupor. It is believed that drinking its water leads to gain of spiritual insight.

Tulsi Manas Temple- close to the Durga temple , was built in 1964. It is dedicated to Lord Rama and is built in the shikhara style. The walls are engraved with verses and scenes from epic �Ramacharitramanas�.

Ram Nagar Fort is situated in 2 kms from the Kashi Hindu University, across the Ganges, and was built by the former rulers of Kashi. In one of the sections of the fort is the museum which displays the royalty which was once part of the Kingdom. This museum gives an insight into the grandeur which once prevailed in the fort.

On the Ramnagar pandav road is a beautiful Durga temple. This temple has very delicate and intricate carving done on stone. These carvings are worth givint a look.

Beneras Hindu University is the largest and oldest university in north India and was established by Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1970. It is a center for education and Indian art, culture, music, philosophy and Sanskrit along with faculties of Science, languages, Engineering, Statistics and Medicine. Inside the campus is the campus is the Bharat kala Museum which has a fine collection of pictures , paintings, manuscripts. Etc.
